The Ethics of Cashmere
Heritage & Reverence
Cashmere has long been heralded as the most sought after and precious of all fibres: veritable nobility of the ultimate softness and warmth. Its heritage is one that spans millennia from its first use in the 3rd century BC to the modern day, where it finds its way into the most luxurious of garments.
Desired for its rarity, its quality, and its longevity, we have meticulously sourced this fiber from in Inner Mongolia, the home of the finest cashmere. We have partnered with local Inner Mongolia goat herders who use indigenous practices to ethically and sustainably harvest the inimitable fiber from cashmere goats in the spring months, when natural shedding of their insulating coat occurs.
Shearing Timing and Frequency
In the Gobi desert, where the cashmere goats we source from live, the conditions are harsh: from cold and relentless winters, to inhospitable arid land. The cashmere goats must develop highly insulating and effective fibers to allow them to thrive; creating a fleece that is unmatched by those living in more temperate climates. The spring months in the Gobi desert cause a natural shedding of this warm undercoat and it is then that our partners in Inner Mongolia shear and harvest the cashmere fibre, creating a system that works in harmony with the natural cycle.
Due to the nature of this process, production runs are very limited and our cashmere pieces are created in small batches.
Responsible Grazing & Environmental Conservation
The detrimental overgrazing of other cashmere brands and the surging demand for cashmere has damaged much of Inner Mongolia's grasslands and delicate ecosystem.
Our cashmere goat herders employ responsible grazing techniques to maintain the health of the pastures, such as rotational grazing and land management strategies as part of a long-term strategy to care for their land.
To minimize the environmental impact of the creation of the cashmere, they also reduce water usage throughout their creation process and use environmentally-friendly dyeing methods.
Fiber Length
Fiber length is one of the factors that affects a cashmere garment’s softness: the longer the fiber, the softer it will be. Longer fibers also reduce pilling. For these reasons, a high-quality cashmere garment will feature a longer cashmere fiber, whereas lower-quality cashmere will feature shorter fibers, as they shear their cashmere goats more often to make more garments instead of a small batch of high-quality garments.
